Be careful when unpacking your Christmas decorations this holiday season. Rodents, spiders and other pests can find their way into homes and nest in boxes of holiday decorations that have been left undisturbed since last year. Attics, basements and garages are ideal places for pest harborage.

Here are some helpful prevention tips! Avoid storing things in cardboard boxes. These are be chewed through easily. Keep wrapping paper and ornaments in large plastic containers, which can be tightly sealed to keep contents dry and secure. Cloth and wool items should be kept in plastic bags. This will keep your stockings and table cloths safe from insects. Inspect decorations each year for mold or damage. Because mold and moisture attract more pests, it’s best to discard these items.

As the weather gets colder, rodents are seeking somewhere warm to hole up for the winter. They can enter through attic crawlspaces, garage door openings, and general cracks and crevices. They only need 1/2 an inch of clearance to get in! Make sure to check around your home for places where they could sneak in. Also be careful leaving doors, windows, and doggie doors open.
