Wood Mouse Apodemus sylvaticus

As we continue to enjoy the winter months, you might be wondering about some ways to keep those pesky pests from trying to join you inside where it’s nice and warm. Here are some tips to help you protect your home. By sealing up cracks and crevices around the foundation, you are eliminating a place where pests can take refuge. Check and see if there are any areas where you can see sunlight coming into your home, whether it be from underneath doors or around windows. Chances are that if the opening is large enough to let sunlight in, then pests can enter. Replacing the weather stripping on doors and screens on windows will help keep the critters at bay!
Another thing that we don’t usually think about until winter is the firewood. Because the wood pile goes undisturbed for a lot of the year, it is a great place for pests to seek harborage. Ideally, the wood pile should be kept away from your house, in a dry area, and off the ground (ex: on a palette). You should use caution when lifting firewood to bring it inside. Carefully inspect pieces to ensure that they are free of pests.
